November 28, 2010

It's hard to believe the month of November is almost over. What happened to September ?. What a great deer season it has been, taking a nice deer in Missouri, a trip to Iowa and of course deer hunting here in Wisconsin. This year definitely ranks up there in the top 5 as far as deer hunting goes when we talk bowhunting it's #1. It's not about the harvest of an animal as much as soaking up and enjoying the experience as a whole. Spending time with friends, making new friends and sharing stories makes the experience complete. Being able to harvest a deer is a bonus. Sometimes we need to take a step back reflect and appreciate the opportunities we have we have to enjoy the great sport of deer hunting. I still plan to get out a day or 2 and fire up the TC smokepole. Remember to stop using excuses to not get out and enjoy the outdoors instead think of reasons to get out and participate. I hope you all had a safe and enjoyable 2010 gun hunt. Tune in this week to hear from the boys from No Excuses and on December 8th Andy, Randy and I will wrap up the 2010 deer hunting season.

Hard to believe the 2010 gun deer season is less than 30 days away. But for now archery season is in full swing. I had a chance to get out after a long day behind the computer. Took a ride to Iola to check the cameras and spend a hour in the stand. With the moon in the full stage ny guess is that they will be out all night. Saw 1 small 6 point, 1 doe with a fawn and 15 turkeys. I did not see any scrapes as I normally do. I did doctor up some old scrape sights with Wall Hanger from James Valley. We will see what that does over the next week. Plenty of pics on the cameras though. . The predator camera has both audio and video capabilities. It rocks, it puts a whole new spin on game cameras.

What a great weekend up at the Post lake cottage. Did a little duck hunting(1 Mallard) there were not many ducks around. Saw a few Mallards and some hen wood ducks. Spent most of the hunting time looking for the elusive Ruffed Grouse. My nephew Dan and I chased around some birds. We had 10 flushes and took 4 birds. Dan shot all 4, sharing your passion for the outdoors with someone you care about that's what it's all about. Also spent some quality time with my family and had a great meal at our favorite local eatery(Wolf's). If you love the fall season get up and get outdoors and enjoy the colors. The picture is of Dan with his double on Grouse, CONGRATULATIONS and I was there.

We took our annual going back to school outing on Friday to Noah's Ark. What fun that was, a beautiful day and time with the family a win win situation. I have to admit though the only ride I went on was the lazy river (I'm getting old you know). On our way we stopped at Ship Rock, a natural rock formation that has over 300 stairs to the top for a breathtaking view. It's located about 7 miles west of Coloma. There are markings on the rocks of all the travelers passing by that go back hundreds of years. Get out and explore some of Wisconsin's Natural beauty.

As we get closer to the hunting season the juices start to flow. I will miss my annual trip to Wyoming to visit the Magee family and chase Antelope and Mule deer. On a better not I have drawn the highly coveted Iowa bow tag. Three years in the waiting the time has come to spend a week with my friend Jack Schaefer in the mighty town of Fairfield. Missouri has also presented an opportunity with Mike Helbing and Double Duece Ranch in Powersville just across the Iowa border. A new adventure in another state, looks to be an awesome bow season this year. If you need a quality hunt you need to contact Mike at helbing @centurytel.net or call 608-572-2389. At his place in Missouri you get 1 buck tag 1 doe tag and 2 turkey tags and some outstanding accommodations for only $1200 for a non-rut hunt. Don't forget to stop in at Gander Mountain and check out the FIRST SHOT event going on thru August 22. The hunters dream plenty of stuff on SALE at great prices or check out the web gandermountain.com. at If you ladies want to know more about the outdoors check out N.E.W. outdoors at northeastwisconsinoutdoors.com. I hope all of you had a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day. I spent the weekend with my family up at the cabin in Post Lake. The goal was to open the cabin and relax. The mice had something to say about that. The little buggers had taken up residence in one of our cabinets. 3 hours later and 6 dead mice we moved on. The water on Post lake was down significantly and warmed up quickly. I believe that the quick warm up caused the crappies and some perch to die off. The shoreline was littered with them. As for the bluegills, non-existent. Not sure where they are but they're not in the shallows nesting. On a more positive note, I took a vet to my favorite brook trout spot. My nephew and I paddled for 30 minutes to get to the spot. As usual we caught plenty of chubs. We did manage to land 6 nice brook trout ranging from 10 to 14 inches. The one pictures was 14 inches. I hope some of you took the time to share the outdoors with someone this past weekend, even better if you shared it with a Military veteran. Thanks to all the vet's out there for putting it on the line. A big thanks to you to Dan your a pretty cool nephew. Now remember don't tell a soul about that spot. Next time you can buy the bait.

I MISSED !!!!!!!!! I spent 3.5 hours in the turkey woods last Wednesday. Not the best of conditions for a hunt but fun to be out. The toms gobbled on the roost and that was pretty much it. I did get one to respond to me and the fun began. I moved in on him 5 times without success. He stayed on the move the whole time. After an hour or so he started to sound closer my heart started to race. I picked my spot and waited for him to expose himself. Much to my surprise he gobbled in the woods no more than 50 yards away and then went silent, i knew he was coming. I prepared for the shot and waited anxiously. As i was looking in the direction i thought he was coming in he popped out in the exact opposite side of where I was positioned. He noticed me right off the bat as I reached for the gun. The off sided shot went over his head and off he went. Much to my disappointment the hunt was over for the day. I have to say that was one of the most exciting hunt I have had in a while. The gobblers can still be had but my suggestion is don't use a decoy, call often, move around and if you locate a tom close the distance as best you can.

Thanks to Perry from Predator Trailcams CLICK HERE for all his support.Join us next week for a rundown of all the new camping equipment available at Gander with my guest Mike Schaefer store manager at Gander Sheboygan.

WOW seems like forever since my last post. With the 2010 spring turkey season in full swing I hope all you hunters had success. Having a permit for the 3rd week is always a charm for me. This year was no different. 9:45 on Wednesday I bagged this bird, I was at full draw with him at 35 yards when he decided he had enough. I slowly put down the bow and grabbed my gun(which I had brought loaded #5s for coyotes) I ended shooting him at 42 yards. Having patterned my gun made all the difference.
The bird activity this year was some of the best I had seen in years. I had 5 gobblers going off the first hour after sunrise.
I also had 4 Jake's come in as well. Seeing birds in good
numbers again is a definitely a positive.
Thanks again to Steve and Jeff from No Excuses Outdoors for coming into the store to give a food plot seminar. We sure appreciate your time and knowledge.

The second photo is Jeff from No Excuses with his bird he shot on the 24th. I guess he can shoot as well as he gives a presentation. Don't forget to send in your photos of your bird to lto@wcinet.com to win that Quaker Boy box call.
